Below are pencil sketches and watercolor exercises completed in the field or in the studio. The images were produced for a course taught by Professor David Mayernik at Notre Dame.

Field Drawing and Watercolor Studies

At left is the first in a two-part exercise that involved depicting the chapel entrance of Notre Dame’s Dillon Hall. Here, the focus was on modeling a three-dimensional subject with credible perspective and a range of values. I produced the drawing on site in the Dillon Hall courtyard. Media: 4B graphite on sketch paper.

Part 2 of the exercise involved depicting the same subject in watercolor using only two tones: lamp black and burnt umber. The image below was also completed in the field.

Copying the work of a master is one of the most valuable exercises for developing one’s own hand at any artistic medium. Above is my copy of a painting by John Singer Sargent of the fountain at the Villa di Marlia in Lucca, Italy.
